Jackman on Demands

David Jackman finished-up his series of lecture with What Preaching Demands. He said there are five demands that lie at the heart of fruitful biblical ministry, non-negotiables that a preacher must always be marked by:
  1. Constantly feeding on the word of God
  2. Dependence upon the Holy Spirit
  3. Commitment to Hard Work and Progress
  4. Love for your Hearers
  5. Realism about the Battle
At one point he made this observation (paraphrased):
If you deprive your preaching program of narrative (i.e. the story parts of the Bible), you’ll deprive your congregation of the great bulk of teaching on the doctrine of God from Scripture.

Gold, I reckon.

Also,

"Does the preacher really live in the house of dogmas that he proclaims? If the preacher is boring the congregation it is probably because he is boring himself!"

and

"Congregations are not passive buckets that you pump information into!"

finally

"People will try and put you on a pedestal and you’ll want them to put you there."

Twas a good week.

There were many classics, hey!

I'm sure it's not just the accent, but I reckon he has a fantastic ability to make thoroughly pedestrian things scintillating... To be fair, I guess it's conveying important truths in fresh ways. What a gift for it!
